كشفت السلطات الغامبية ، الخميس ، للمرة الأولى عن تفاصيل محاولة الانقلاب الفاشلة في 20 ديسمبر / كانون الأول في بانجول ، قائلة إن منفذيها خططوا لاعتقال كبار المسؤولين الحكوميين واستخدامهم كرهائن لمنع أي تدخل أجنبي.
وأكد أبو بكر سليمان جينغ ، مستشار الأمن القومي ، الذي قرأ البيان على وسائل الإعلام في مقر الدفاع في بانجول.
تم تشكيل لجنة تحقيق ، من المقرر أن تقدم تقريرًا خلال شهر ، في غامبيا يوم الثلاثاء لتسليط الضوء على محاولة الانقلاب المزعومة هذه ، وهي الأحدث في غرب إفريقيا منذ عام 2020 ، بعد انقلابين ناجحين في مالي وبوركينا فاسو ، وآخر في غينيا. ، ومحاولة في غينيا بيساو.
تم اعتقال سبعة جنود على صلة بهذه القضية.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك ، تم اعتقال سياسي ، وزير شؤون الرئاسة الأسبق في ظل نظام يحيى جامح (1994-2017) وعضو حزب المعارضة الرئيسي ، الحزب الديمقراطي المتحد ، بعد ظهوره في مقطع فيديو يشير إلى أن الرئيس ستتم الإطاحة به قبل الانتخابات المحلية القادمة. يطالب حزبه بالإفراج عنه فوراً.
وقال جينغ إن الخطة التي اكتشفتها السلطات “تظهر تكوين التشكيلة التي كان من المقرر أن تشارك” في محاولة الانقلاب وكذلك خطتها للاستيلاء على السلطة ، بما في ذلك السيطرة على وسائل الإعلام الحكومية.
وتابع “في غضون ذلك ، ثبت أن المتآمرين أقاموا اتصالات وعقدوا اجتماعات سرية في أماكن محددة داخل البلاد” للتخطيط للانقلاب ، مشيرا إلى تواطؤ المدنيين داخل وخارج البلاد.
