تقع مدينة دگانه على المصب السفلي لنهر السنغال ويوازيها مباشرة على الحدود الموريتانية مركز جدر المحگن الإداري شرق روصو، وتتبع دگانه إداريا لولاية سينلوي، ظلت مركزًا تجاريًا هامًا في الحقبة الاستعمارية، ولا تزال تحتفظ بالمباني القديمة لمحلاتها التجارية التي جعلت من رصيفها الشهير واحدًا من أكثر الأماكن حيوية ونشاطا في تاريخ السنغال . قبل الاستعمار الفرنسي كانت جزءًا من مملكة الوالو وكانت عاصمتها لفترة من الزمن.

وفي الفترة الاستعمارية، كانت مدينة دگانه مركزاً تجارياً مهماً بفضل وجود شركات تجارية كبيرة مثل Maurel & Prom وغيرها من الشركات الفرنسية التي كانت تزاول تجارة الصمغ العربي المزدهر.
وكانت قبلة للموريتانيين من تجار ووجهاء وأدباء،
في رسالة للأمير أعمر ولد المختار (1800-1829)
أرسلها للوالي الفرنسي لكوبى Le Coupé يقول الأمير: (… ودگانه قرية لأهل محمد ببانه لاتباعُ ولا تعار..) نسبة لمحمد ببانه بن اعلي شنظوره بن هدي بن أحمد بن دمان. ١

في دگانه تزوج الأمير محمد لحبيب ابنة أمير الوالو الأميرة ” اچمبتْ امْبُودْجْ ” سنة 1833 وكان ثمرة هذا الزواج ولادة الأمير اعلي ولد محمد لحبيب أمير الضفتين والجامع بين الجهتين.

ويأتي هدف الزواج في إطار سياسة تحالفات لجمع الكلمة من حول الأمبر محمد لحببب  وتأكيد سيادته في المنطقة، وقد تم ذلك الزواج في يوم 18-06-1833 ،

وقد استمرت الاحتفالات بهذه المناسبة مدة شهرين ،
أهدى الأمير محمد لحبيب الملكة اچمبت: مائة من الخيل و مائة من الإبل ومائة من البقر ومائة من الضأن والماعز ومائة من كل انواع الهدايا المتاحة وقتها في مثل هذه المناسبات الاجتماعية .

واعتبر الوالي الفرنسي ” سينجرمان ” في رسالة إلى باريس هذا الزواج : “حدثا ستكون له نتائج بالغة الخطورة لأنه سيمكن يوما ما من تتويج أحد ملوك البيضان ملكا على والو، وهو ما يلغي حياد الضفة اليسرى بين الفرنسيين و البيظان في صراعهم المتكرر معنا ،”
مما دفع الوالي لشن حرب شعواء ضد إمارة اترارزة و والو امتدت من 1833 إلى 1935 سوف تنتهي باتفاقية مهمة بينه مع الأمير محمد الحبيب.

لقد شاعت دگانه وذاعت في شعر الأدباء الموريتانيين لازدهار تجارة العلك واجتماع الناس على ابواب أغرمان وما يدور حول ذلك من قبض وبسط..
ومن أشهر ذلك أبيات الأديب العم ولد أحمد فال :

أما واليعملات من المطايا:: ومكنون المحاسن من حذام
لمن ريب الزمان ومعتداهُ:: مقامي في (دَگَانَ) بلا مقامِ
كأني في المحافل (واو عمرو):: و (همز الوصل) في درج الكلام

أما الشاعر  أبو بكر الفاضلي ”بكِّن” فيقول فى أحد أعيان ﮂگانه اسمه يحيى: 

لقد فضل الرحمن من أنزل الوحيا:: على أهل هذا الشط قاطبة يحيى

فمن كان فى داگانٓ ميّّت حاجة:: فيحيى به الحاجات ميتها يحيى

و من الطريف عتاب الشاعر على يحيى هذا بعد ذلك فقال :

شهدت ليحيى بالسماح شهادة :: تبينتُ فيها بعد أني كاذبُ 

و أشهدكم و الله يعلم أننى :: إلى الله من تلك الشهادة تائبُ

ويقول الشيخ سيدي محمد بن الشيخ سيدي المختار بن الشيخ المصطف :

فؤاديَ لا تجزَعْ ولا تترُكِ الصبْرَا :: 

وفوِّضْ لربّ الدهرِ خالقِكَ الأمْرَا 

فإن قلتَ في داگانَ دهرٌ كأنهُ :: 

من الطُّولِ يومًا منه تحسبُه شهْرَا  

فقد كُنتَ في “بِئْرِ الإلهِ”  منَعَّمًا :: 

تمُرُّ الليالي مَا عرَفتَ لها قدْرَا 

فحمْدُكَ للنُّعْمَى يزيدُكَ نعمةً :: 

وصبْرُك للنّقمى يزيدُ لك الأجْرَا 

فلا تَحْسبِ الأيامَ كلًّا لذيذةً :: 

ولا تأْمَنِ السلطانَ والغِيدَ والدهْرَا.

ومن المعروف أن ضريح الشاعر الكبير محمد ولد ابن ولد احميدن يوجد في دگانه مع جماعة اخرى من الموريتانيين. 
يقول الأستاذ محمد فال ولد عبد اللطيف: ” وقد كان شاطئ النهر في موسم العلك أشبه ما يكون بالمربد أول الدولة الأموية يثوب إليه الأدباء والشعراء من كل صوب وحدب وتثار النزاعات والنزعات والعصبيات وتنشد فيه الأشعار وتقع المساجلات الفصيحة والشعبية ولو وجد هذا الأدب من يبحث عنه في مظانه ويجمعه لكان رافداأ كبيرا من روافد الأدب الموريتاني،  “

رغم تراجع دور دگانه وانحسار دورها التجاري مع انتهاء تجارة العلك، فلا تزال طرقها وشوارعها ومبانيها شاهدة على تراث أدبي واجتماعي كبير للموريتانيين في هذه المدينة وخاصة حي اولاد ديمان المعروف محليا ب gadaga awlad deyman القائم حتى اليوم وسط المدينة، ويقطنه الكثير من ذوي الأصول الموريتانية وتنتشر فيه محلات بيع المشوي فيما تهبّ منه في المساء رائحة العيش الصالح المتوارث في دگانه جيلا بعد جيل…
