شكلت مكة المكرمة لغزا للكثير من المستشرقين ، فانصب هدفهم في التعرف على ما تتميز به من خاصية دون سواها مكنتها من جذب أفئدة المسلمين ، فتحرك البعض منهم صوبها بتكليف من حكوماتهم ، ودخلوها كجواسيس مرتدي زي الإسلام ، فيما باطنهم يؤكد سعيهم لإعداد دراسات اجتماعية ، أو اقتصادية عن مكة المكرمة وسكانها ، وكان من أبرز مهامهم الاستخباراتية التعرف على الدين الذي يعتنقه المسلمون ، وإصرارهم على القدوم لمكة المكرمة لأداء فريضة الحج ، متحملين صعوبة الطريق ، والبعد عن الأهل والولد أشهرا عدة .
ومن بين الذين قدموا مكة المكرمة يوهان لودفيغ بوركهارت ، المعروف بــ ” بوركهارد ” ، وهو من مواليد مدينة لوزان السويسرية في الــ 24 من نوفمبر عام 1784م ، من أب سويسري وأم إنجليزية ، أنهى دراسته الثانوية بمدرسة «نوف هوتيل» ، والتحق بجامعة ليبزيج عام 1800م ، واضطر للانتقال إلى لندن بعد احتلال نابليون لبلاده عام 1806م ، ، وكانت لندن حينها مهتمة بدراسة أحوال العالم الإسلامي ، ومنافسة لفرنسا على هذا العالم ، ودرس بجامعتي لندن وكمبريدج اللغة العربية، وعلم الفلك، وعلم المعادن، والكيمياء، والطب والجراحة، ومكنته دراسته من الالتحاق بالجمعية الملكية المعنية بالاكتشافات الجغرافية في أفريقيا، والتي رشحته للقيام برحلة استكشاف في إفريقيا.
وفي مارس من عام 1809م ، بدأ بوركهارت أولى رحلاته فغادر إنجلترا متجها إلى مدينة حلب ليقضي بها ثلاث سنوات ، تعلم فيها اللغة العربية والثقافة العربية والإسلامية ، وتنقل بين الأقطار العربية حتى وصل إلى شندي ثم سواكن في السودان ، ومنها انضم إلى قافلة لحجاج أفارقة فأتجه بحراً إلى جدة التي وصلها عام 1814م ، وكتب عنها وصفا دقيقا تناول فيه عادات أهلها وتجارتهم ، ثم انطلق إلى مكة المكرمة متخفيا بزي اسلامي وباسم ابراهيم الالباني ، ومكنته رحلته إلى مكة المكرمة عام 1814 م ، من أداء فريضة الحج ليكون كما قيل أول حاج أوروبي ، وبسبب المرض اضطر للبقاء في مكة حتى منتصف عام 1815م، وهو أول من رسم خارطة أوروبية حديثة لمكة المكرمة . وبعد مغادرته لمكة المكرمة قام بعدة رحلات لمناطق أثرية مثل بعلبك في لبنان .
وإن كان بوركهارت قد تقمص اسم إبراهيم الالباني أثناء دخوله لمكة المكرمة ، فقد تقمص دور هندي مسلم جاء إلى البتراء ، لتقديم أضحية إلى النبي هارون ، ويقال أنه هو مكتشف البتراء ، وألف كتابا عنها عام 1828 م عرف باسم ” رحلات في سوريا والديار المقدسة ” ضم صورا للبتراء ، وله كتاب آخر بعنوان ” رحلات في شبه الجزيرة العربية “
وحينما قرر بوركهارت العودة إلى بلاده اصابه مرض ، فتحامل على نفسه حتى وصل إلى سيناء وظل بها قرابة الشهرين ، ودوّن الكثير عن أهلها وقبائلها ، ووصل مصر وتوفي بها سنة 1817م.
