وصف وزير الخارجية السوداني المكلف عمر قمر الدين، مراحل التطبيع مع إسرائيل بـ”مراحل الزواج”.
وخلال مؤتمر صحفي عقده الوزير المكلف سأله الصحفي “عمار آدم” تعليقا على هذا التشبيه، (متى الدخله)”؟، فرد عليه الدبلوماسي السوداني “أخليها ليك إنت والمآذون”.
وفي المؤتمر ذاته، دافع وزير الخارجية عمر قمر الدين عن التطبيع، قائلا إنه “لم يتم بإملاءات وضغوط من الإدارة الأمريكية، وإنما تقدير موقف من المسؤولين في مجلسي السيادة والوزراء”.
وصرح قمر الدين: “لم يكن أمامنا خيار غير اقتناص الفرصة الضيقة المتاحة مع اقتراب الانتخابات الأمريكية، بقبول التطبيع، مع اشتراطنا أولا إزالة اسم السودان من قائمة الإرهاب”.
ولفت إلى أن “ما تم حتى الآن بين البلدين هو اتفاق مبدئي على التطبيع، وليس تطبيعا كاملا، ويجب المصادقة عليه من المجلس التشريعي”.
وفي 23 أكتوبر 2020، أعلن قادة الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل والسودان في بيان مشترك، عن توصل الخرطوم وتل أبيب لاتفاق لتطبيع العلاقات بينهما.
وأكد البيان حينها أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب ورئيس مجلس السيادة الانتقالي السوداني عبد الفتاح البرهان ورئيس الحكومة السودانية عبد الله حمدوك ورئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو، بحثوا هاتفيا “التقدم التاريخي الذي أحرزه السودان نحو الديمقراطية ودعم السلام في المنطقة”.
وينص البيان المشترك على أن الاتفاق المبرم يقضي بإقامة علاقات اقتصادية وتجارية بين إسرائيل والسودان مع التركيز مبدئيا على الزراعة.
وشدد البيان على أن الولايات المتحدة “ستتخذ خطوات لاستعادة حصانة السودان السيادية وتشجيع الشركاء الدوليين على تخفيف أعباء ديون السودان”، مضيفا أن الشعب السوداني يقرر مصيره بعد “عقود من الديكتاتورية العنيفة”.
