يمضي اليوم عشر سنوات على التمام والكمال على رحيل شخصية أسطورية فذة يشار إليها بالبنان في زمننا المعاصر، بالنظر إلى حجم الإنجازات العظيمة التي حققها والبصمات الناصعة التي تركها عبر عقود من التفاني والتضحية ونكران الذات. رجل ما إن تذكر اسمه حتى ترفع له القبعات تقديراً لأعماله الخيرية وخدماته الإنسانية الجليلة التي ماتزال آثارها ترتسم على وجه القارة الإفريقية.
الشيخ السميط هو مؤسس جمعية العون المباشر «لجنة مسلمي أفريقيا سابقاً»، وُلد يوم 15 أكتوبر عام 1947 في الكويت، وكان طفلا متدينا شغوفا بالقراءة مما جعله متميزا عن أقرانه وأكثر منهم وعياً بما يحيط بهم.
السميط الذي بدأ حياته العملية طبيبا شخصية دعوية سامقة شامخة وطود راسخ ودوحة عظيمة لم تهزها الرياح العاتية، بل أفنى حياته وكرسها داعياً إلى الله وماسحا لدموع المساكين. ترك وظيفته المجزية وحياته الرافهة وراح يعمر مساجد يرفع فيها اسم الله، ويشيد مؤسسات تربوية تبني العقول ومرافق صحية تعالج المرضى ومراكز يلوذ إليها اليتامى. قضى ربع قرن من حياته إفريقيا التي صال وجال فيها يدعو الناس فدخل الإسلام الآلاف المؤلفة على يديه. لم يفت من عضده الأمراض التي كان يعاني منها مثل السكري وآلام القدمين والظهر لأنه نذر نفسه ووقته وجهده وماله للعمل الخيري والدعوي في قارة أفريقيا.
تشرفت بحضور حفل خاص نظمه مركز اشراق للفتيات تكريما له عام 2010 بحضور رئيس مجلس الأمة الكويتي الراحل جاسم الخرافي ولفيف من الشخصيات الكويتية البارزة، حيث أكد الخرافي أن السميط شخصية لها مكانتها وتقديرها ليس بين أهله ووطنه فحسب، وإنما كسب احترام الجميع وإعجابهم على المستوى العالمي، مؤكدا شعوره بالاعتزاز والفخر عند سماع أخبار العمل الخيري الكويتي في دول عدة، لافتا إلى أن السميط تشرف بمرافقة الأمير الراحل الشيخ جابر الأحمد ورأينا اعماله الخيرة التي نفذها في دول كثيرة ونتائجها التي أثمرت عن تحسين مستوى معيشة الكثيرين.” ولتواضعه الجم قال السميط إنه كان سيرفض لو علم أن الحفل أقيم لتكريمه، مضيفا: ” «لم أكن أعلم ان هذا الاحتفال خصص لتكريمي، وإلا لرفضت، وانا أقل من ان أكرم، وفي الكويت رجال خيرون أكثر مني كأمثال يوسف الحجي».
وفي أواخر سنواته تدهورت حالته الصحية وأخذ يعاني من توقف في وظائف الكلى وخضع لعناية مركزة في مستشفى مبارك الكبير، واستمر على تلك الحال حتى توفي يوم الخميس 15 أغسطس، رحمه الله.
لا يفوتني في هذه العجالة إلا أن أعبر عن امتناني للراحل عبد الرحمن السميط الذي حصلت من خلاله على منحة دراسية لمواصلة دراستي في دولة الكويت التي احتضتني وغمرتني برعايتها وعنايتها لأكثر من عقدين. جزى الله السميط خيراً وتغمده بشآبيب رحمته وأسكنه فسيح جناته.
