كارستن نيبور ألماني المولد دنماركي الخدمة ، ولد في 17 مارس 1733 م ، بقرية بشمال غرب ألمانيا في ساكسونيا السفلى، الواقعة على الحدود مع بولندا ومع جمهورية التشيك ، وكانت قبل الوحدة الألمانية إحدى أهم ولايات جمهورية ألمانيا الديمقراطية ، وعمل في بداية حياته فلاحاً في مزرعته ، وبدأ في دراسة علوم الرياضيات ، ولشغفه بها درس علوم المساحة والخرائط.
وحينما أمر إمبراطور الدانمارك فردريك الخامس ، بتشكيل فريق علمي لدراسة الحياة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والبيئية والجغرافية للحجاز سنة 1760 م ، برئاسة عالم النبات بيتر فورسكول وفون هافن ، وأعضاء آخرون منهم الرسام باورنفايند ، إضافة إلى طبيب ومهندس ، شارك نيبور في الفريق بناء على اقتراح من أحد أساتذته ، وانخرط في دراسة الرياضيات والمساحة والخرائط واللغة العربية ، وتأهل بعدها للعمل كماسح وراسم خرائط ، وبعد عام من أمر الامبراطور أي في عام 1761م انطلق الفريق ، إلى مصر ، فيما غادر نيبور عام 1762م إلى السويس ومنها إلى جدة، ثم إلى مكة المكرمة .
وصف نيبور القنفذة بقوله ” كبيرة ..تتميز بمياهها العذبة وبمؤنها الاخرى وتضطر السفن الآتية من اليمن والمحملة بالبن إلى دفع رسوم ويقول ويخضع حاكم القنفذة لشريف مكة وجدة وليس لسلطان القسطنطينية أية سلطة عليه ثم يذكر، أن حاكم القنفذة يقيم في جزيرة صغيرة (بها حصن ومدافع) “
وقال عن أبحر: “إن مدخل هذا المرسى ضيق للغاية، لكنه آمن حتى إننا لم نُنْزِلْ المرساة واكتفينا بربط السفينة من الجهتين بحجارة كبيرة في أرصفة مرجانية”
وقال عن جدة : “إن أهل جدة أظهروا الود له ولرفاقه. وقال نيبور: لم يساورنا الشعور بالخوف قط من سكان مدينة بقدر ما خفنا من سكان جدة قبل أن ندخلها، وذلك بعد أن رأينا الازدراء الذي يعامل به الأوروبيون في بعض المدن العربية الأخرى، لكن تبين لنا أننا على خطأ، فكنا نزور المقاهي والأسواق، ونتنزه قرب البحر وفي المدينة ومحيطها دون أن يتعرض لنا أحد»
ووثق نيبور رحلته في ثلاث مجلدات تناول الأول منها : وصف الجزيرة العربية، وتناول وصف كامل للجزيرة العربية وأسماء مدنها وقراها ، ونُشر في كوبنهاغن بلغة هولندية سنة 1772 م
فيما تناول المجلد الثاني : (رحلات إلى بلاد العرب وبلدان أخرى محيطة بها)، ونُشر عام 1774 م، وقد اعاد أحد أبناء نيبور نشر هذا المجلد سنة 1837 م، واضاف إليه بعض ابحاث رفيق نيبور (فورسكال) وهو عالم الأحياء النباتية، وهذا المجلد تم ترجمته إلى العربية بواسطة : عبير المنذر، واصدرته دار الانتشار العربي سنة 2007 م.
وطبع المجلد الثالث عام 1792 م ، في مدينة ادنبرة، وكان مناسب لحصول المؤسسات الأكاديمية على ما ترغبه من معلومات تهم أوروبا بالتحديد.
تنقل نيبور في عدة مناصب عسكرية بكوبنهاغن ، حتى عام 1778م عندما استلم منصبا مدنيا رفيعاً في مقاطعة هولشتاين حتى وفاته عام 1815م .
